BASICS TO BACKYARD CHICKENS
When making the decision to get your own flock of hens going in the backyard, there are a few principles and ideas that should be considered and carefully thought through to ensure good production and health in your chickens.
- Breed
- Selecting the right breed of chicken based on your requirements and expectations
- Where to start?
- Deciding whether to raise chicks or purchase ready to lay hens
- Housing
- Coop design and space requirements
- Nesting
- Picking the right style nesting box
- Nutrition and health
- Nutritional requirements, diet supplements and health
- Food and water
- Feeding and watering systems
- Seasons
- Lighting systems to ensure lay throughout winter periods
An understanding of these concepts will ensure that your chickens are raised in an environment that promotes health and within a system that is easy to manage.
Speaker: Ishmael Van De Griend
Originally from California, Ishmael migrated with his family to the Southwest of WA in 2014. Since then, he has been heavily involved in a regenerative organic farming operation on their property just outside Bridgetown known as The Organic Fine Food Company.
For the last 6 years, one of Ishmael’s main responsibilities has been to cooperatively manage and maintain The Organic Fine Food Company’s flock of over 2000 Hy-Line and Bonds Black laying hens. Each group of chickens is raised with certified organic standards from day-old chicks to the end of their laying cycles.
Ishmael’s large-scale experience relating to raising poultry in a regenerative and organic system on his family’s farm is something that easily translates to the topic of raising chickens in an urban or backyard environment.
